What is a Aircraft & Powerplant Mechanic?

Aircraft and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics are responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of aircraft and aircraft engines. An A&P mechanic must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft systems and components as well as a detailed understanding of the controls, procedures, and regulations governing aircraft operation.

Job Duties

A&P mechanics are expected to:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair engines, airframes, and aircraft accessories.
  • Inspect aircraft parts for defects, such as cracks and corrosion, and repair or replace them as necessary.
  • Monitor and adjust aircraft systems during and after flight tests.
  • Assemble and install electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems and components.
  • Test and troubleshoot aircraft systems using appropriate diagnostic tools.
  • Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on aircrafts.
  • Work with and supervise other mechanics.
  • Comply with safety regulations and industry standards.

Qualifications

A&P mechanics must have FAA A&P certification to work in the United States. This certification is obtained by completing a certified education program or passing a written test and subsequent practical test administered by the Federal Aviation Administration.
