Do AHL Players Have Other Jobs?

The American Hockey League (AHL) is known as the top minor-league ice hockey organization in North America and is home to many athletes. And while most viewers are familiar with the AHL’s on-ice performance, many don’t realize what AHL players do off the ice!

Careers That AHL Players Have Outside Hockey

AHL players have a variety of career paths outside of their on-ice accomplishments. Here are a few of the most common:

  • Business Owners: Many AHL players are entrepreneurs and own businesses. For example, former AHL player and team captain Sean O’Donnell created a skincare company that specializes in men’s grooming.
  • Broadcasters: AHL players often retire, then become broadcasters for the league or a local television or radio station. Former AHL player Dan Barnes is now the play-by-play announcer for the Manitoba Moose.
  • Investments: Some AHL players have built successful careers as investors. Anthony Mantha, currently playing with the Detroit Red Wings, started his own investment firm in the summer of 2015.
  • Coaches: Like many ex-athletes, many AHL players go into coaching careers after retirement. Former AHL player Jody Shelley currently serves as an assistant coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters.

How Do AHL Players Balance their Hockey Careers and Other Jobs?

AHL players must balance their on-ice careers with the demands and responsibilities of any other job. AHL players are often pulled in different directions and must stay organized in order to keep their priorities straight. One former AHL player claimed that “it can be hard to stay focused and motivated on the ice when you have so much going on outside the rink.”

Regardless, many AHL players find ways to juggle their time and be successful both on and off the ice. With hard work and dedication they can create opportunities that keep both their hockey and non-hockey careers alive!
