One of the most important parts of being a head coach is knowing when to make the right calls. Payton must be able to recognize when it’s time to go for it on fourth down, when to call a time out, and when to switch out players. Making the right calls can be the difference between winning and losing a game.
2. Develop Winning Strategies
It’s Payton’s job to develop strategies that will work and set the team up for success. He must be able to develop both offensive and defensive schemes that will work for short-term success as well as long-term success. He needs to be aware of what all of his players can do, and be able to tailor a strategy that will help the team win.
3. Keep the Team Motivated
Head coaches don’t just call plays and devise strategies, they also need to be able to inspire and motivate the players. Payton must be able to keep the team focused and working towards the same goal. He should be able to get the team fired up and ready to go, no matter what the situation.
4. Manage the Media
Not only is it his job to manage the players, but it is also very important that Payton manages the team’s public perception in the media. He must be able to navigate the media and not let any negative press hurt the team. He needs to be able to maintain a good public image for the team, both on and off the field.
