Why Homeless People Struggle to Get Jobs

Prospective employers may be hesitant to provide employment opportunities to homeless people, due to several underlying factors. Having no permanent residence or steady access to resources makes searching for or maintaining employment painstakingly difficult for those who may be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Lack of skills and experience

Oftentimes, homeless people have gaps in their resumes due to having to move from one place to another, which may impede their ability to find employment. They may struggle to acquire the skills and experience required and may need to take courses or receive special training to make themselves competitive in the workforce.

Difficult to Maintain a Job

Obtaining employment is only the first step in a complex and difficult process for someone who may be homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Without the stability and support of a home, it is much harder for someone to show up to a job on a regular basis and consistently perform their job duties. Homelessness can be emotionally and physically draining, making it difficult for someone to sustain employment without the support of family, friends, or widespread resources and programs.

Barriers to Fundamental Necessities

Beyond securing and maintaining employment, homeless people and those at risk of becoming homeless may struggle to meet fundamental necessities that are often required for a successful job. Such necessities include but are not limited to:

  • Transportation: Homeless people may lack access to reliable, affordable transportation.
  • Child care: Homeless people with children may not have access to child care while they are at work.
  • A place to take breaks: Homeless people may not have access to a place where they can take breaks throughout the day.
  • A computer or phone: Without access to these resources, homeless people may struggle to complete important elements of their job, such as completing online applications or responding to phone calls.
  • Hygiene: It can be difficult for homeless people to maintain a clean and appropriate appearance for employment.

Securing and maintaining a job can be a challenge for anyone, including homeless people. Without access to fundamental resources, people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless may continue to struggle to be employed, making them vulnerable to the risks of homelessness.
